Taking Attendance
Daily attendance is a core part of Tawaasal. As a teacher, you mark attendance for your assigned classes. The platform tracks attendance history and generates reports that school administrators and guardians can review.
Accessing Attendance
- Navigate to Attendance from the sidebar.
- You will see the attendance interface for your classes.
Marking Attendance
- Select the class you want to take attendance for.
- Select the date (defaults to today).
- A list of all students in the class is displayed.
- For each student, mark their status:
- Present — The student is in class.
- Absent — The student is not present.
- Late — The student arrived after the expected time.
- Excused — The student is absent with a valid reason (such as an approved leave request).
- Click Save Attendance to submit the attendance record.
If most students are present, click Mark All Present first and then change the status for individual students who are absent or late.
- Select the class you want to take attendance for.
- Today jumps the date selector back to the current day.
- Mark All Present sets every student to Present at once.
- Save Attendance submits the record.
- Each student has a row of status controls — click the one that applies.
Reviewing Attendance History
To see past attendance records for a class:
- Go to Attendance from the sidebar.
- Change the date selector to navigate to previous days.
- Attendance records for each date are shown with each student's status.
You can also view a specific student's attendance history by navigating to their student profile.
Leave Requests
Students or their guardians may submit leave requests for planned absences. Your access to leave requests depends on the permissions your school administrator has granted your role.
Viewing Leave Requests
By default, teachers have view-only access to leave requests for students in their assigned classes. To view leave requests:
- Navigate to Leave Requests from the sidebar.
- See a list of leave requests for students in your classes.
- Use the status filter to narrow the list, and click View Details to review a request, including the reason and requested dates.
The Leave Requests section is only visible if you have been granted the can_view_leave_request permission. If you do not see it, contact your school administrator.
- The Leave Requests tab is active.
- Filter the list by status — Pending, Approved, Rejected or Cancelled.
- View Details opens a request's full information.
Submitting Leave Requests on Behalf of Students
If your school grants you the can_submit_leave_request permission, you can submit leave requests on behalf of students in your classes:
- Navigate to Leave Requests from the sidebar.
- Click New Leave Request.
- Select the student, enter the date range, leave type, and reason.
- Click Submit.
Teacher-submitted leave requests are scoped to students in your assigned classes only. You cannot submit leave requests for students you do not teach.
Approving or Rejecting Leave Requests
If your school grants you the can_approve_leave_request permission, you can approve or reject leave requests for students in your classes:
- Navigate to Leave Requests from the sidebar.
- Open the leave request you want to action.
- Click Approve or Reject and provide a reason if rejecting.
By default, leave request approval is handled by school administrators. Schools can optionally grant teachers approval authority via role settings. Check with your school administrator to understand who is responsible for approvals in your school.
What Guardians See
Guardians can view their children's attendance records through the guardian portal. When you mark a student as absent, their guardian may receive a notification (depending on the school's notification configuration).
Tips
- Mark attendance at the start of each class — Consistent timing ensures accurate records.
- Update late arrivals — If a student arrives after you have already submitted attendance, you can go back and change their status from "Absent" to "Late".
- Note patterns — If you notice a student frequently absent, raise the concern with your school administrator or safeguarding team.
- Check holidays — The attendance system respects the academic calendar. You will not be prompted to take attendance on holidays or non-school days.
