Messages
Tawaasal's messaging feature lets you communicate directly with teachers, staff, and guardians. You can send individual messages or broadcast messages to a whole class.
Accessing Messages
- Navigate to Messages from the sidebar.
- You will see a list of your conversations, sorted by the most recent message.
- Start a broadcast to a whole class.
- Start a one-to-one conversation.
- Switch to your active conversations.
- Switch to conversations you have archived.
Starting a New Conversation
Direct Message
- Click the New Message button.
- Select the recipient — you can filter by role and message teachers, guardians, students, admins, or staff.
- Type your message (up to 5,000 characters).
- Click Send.
- Search recipients by name or email.
- Show every possible recipient.
- Narrow the list to one role, such as Guardian.
Class Broadcast
To send a message to a whole class:
- Click the Broadcast button — this is separate from New Message.
- Choose the broadcast type: Class Guardians (all guardians of students in the class) or Class Students (all students in the class).
- Choose the class, then type your message and click Send Broadcast.
- Send to every guardian of a class.
- Send to every student in a class instead.
- Confirm and send once you have chosen a class and written your message.
Class broadcasts are ideal for class-wide announcements such as upcoming tests, field trip reminders, or schedule changes. For individual student matters, use a direct message to the guardian instead.
Reading and Replying to Messages
- Click on a conversation to open it.
- Read the message history.
- Type your reply in the message box at the bottom.
- Click Send to reply.
When you open a conversation, it is automatically marked as read.
Managing Conversations
- Mute — If a conversation generates too many notifications, you can mute it. You will still see new messages, but you will not receive push notifications or email alerts.
- Archive — Conversations you no longer need can be archived to keep your inbox tidy.
Conversation Types
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Direct Message | One-to-one conversation between you and another user (teacher, guardian, student, admin, or staff). |
| Class Guardians Broadcast | A message from you to all guardians of students in a specific class. |
| Class Students Broadcast | A message from you to all students in a specific class. |
| Admin Broadcast | A message from the school administrator to targeted groups. You may receive these but cannot create them. |
Notifications
Depending on your school's notification settings, you may receive alerts when:
- A guardian sends you a new message.
- A guardian replies to an existing conversation.
- An administrator sends a broadcast message.
Check your Preferences to manage how you receive message notifications (email, push notification, or in-app).
Guardians appreciate timely responses. Try to respond to messages within a reasonable timeframe, especially if the message concerns a student's welfare or academic progress.
Tips
- Be professional — Messages are part of the school's communication record. Write clearly and professionally.
- Keep it relevant — Use messaging for school-related topics. Direct guardians to the appropriate channels for administrative matters.
- Use direct messages for sensitive topics — Do not share sensitive student information in class broadcasts. Use a direct message to the specific guardian instead.
- Check messages regularly — Make it a habit to check your messages at least once a day so you do not miss important communications from guardians or administrators.
